Formats that build understanding.

Johanna Ickert is a documentary filmmaker and visual anthropologist. As a director, writer and editor she creates science communication formats for research institutions, foundations and museums — among them, since 2017, numerous films for the Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS) Potsdam and the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences. Her work ranges from documentaries and reportage to conference and explainer films, exhibition media and interactive formats.

Knowledge transfer is her second focus: she teaches seminars in visual anthropology, leads training in science communication and regularly runs cultural education workshops in which children and young people produce their own media pieces.

She studied European Ethnology, Communication Studies and Sociology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Film and Television Directing at Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, graduating summa cum laude from both. From 2014 to 2017 she was a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Plymouth, where a practice-based PhD examined how participatory storytelling changes the communication of climate and geohazard risk.

Her films have screened at international festivals and received several awards, among them the interactive documentary “ClimateCultures” and “Energieland”, about the conflict over CCS technology in Germany.

In the Science x Media Tandem of the Stiftung Charité she is developing a game on infection prevention for children in day-care centres, together with Susanne Richter and the scientist Dr Evjenia Toubekis. With Susanne Richter she also founded the family platform kindr, which was named one of the Kultur- und Kreativpilotinnen 2024/25 and received the Gründungspreis Digitale Innovationen. As a board member of the SEELAND Medienkooperative she is active in cultural education.

Susanne Richter is a filmmaker and psychologist (Diplom-Psychologin). As a director and producer she has realised various films in the field of science communication. She currently works mainly with documentary formats on the themes of family, children, health and prevention.

Alongside her psychology studies, she completed further training in media psychology, media education and media research at the Center for Media Research at Freie Universität Berlin, graduating with distinction in 2007. Her diploma thesis was awarded the Marie-Schlei-Preis for outstanding academic dissertations.

She worked as an assistant director and producer for film and television productions in Berlin and New York, and in 2001 won first prize at the European young filmmakers' festival for postproduction and visual effects, »eDIT«, with her first short film. Since 2008 she has worked as a freelance filmmaker, including for Anthro Media. In 2013, together with Anja Hansmann, she founded the production company libellefilm, where she was a partner, producer and director until 2018. During this time, numerous information and educational films were made in the areas of Frühe Hilfen, child development, prevention and health. From 2012 to 2017 she served on the board of the Landesverband Kinder- und Jugendfilm kijufi.
